STATE/LOCAL ECONOMY

Military installations are a robust part of the U.S. economy that offer a plethora of opportunity for individuals, families, and local businesses and organizations. There are many situations throughout the country that benefit to different extents from this economic incentive. In instances like Washington D.C., Texas, and Groton, CT, the military plays a huge role in local and state economies. In Washington D.C., the military is the second largest public employer, where Texas follows suit with the military generating $123.7 billion in economic activity, and in Groton, CT the military and associates make up 60% of the local workforce.

Hawaii is in a unique situation economically. They are extremely far away and only accessible by air and boat. They also have a lot of crippling economic problems such as being one of the states with the highest debt per capita, lowest wages, highest cost of living, and related struggles for the citizens. Their only two significant sources of economic flow comes from tourism and military installations. Most notably, they host the headquarters of the United States Pacific Command (USPACOM), which involves the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, and Coast Guard. In addition, the military partners with CyberHawaii, Ship Repair Association of Hawaii, and Pearl Harbor Apprenticeship Program. The Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard (PHNSY) Apprenticeship Program aims to “provide highly skilled journey workers and future leaders in government” and the apprentices also receive “well-rounded academic study through Honolulu Community College held at the Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard Training Facility, and paid structured work experience at the Shipyard which is applied toward an Associate in Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree.”
