How does military pipeline propaganda pressure

families in the poverty cycle to enlist in the military?

ABSTRACT

The ability of military propaganda to target and recruit people in the poverty cycle leads to higher enlistment rates of young people whose parents are not college educated as well as people of color. We are aiming to find the link between military propaganda and the poverty cycle, to find who the military targets for enlistment. In order to answer the question of how military pipeline propaganda pressures families in the poverty cycle to enlist in the military we must look at enlistment rates as well as tactics of military recruiters. Research has shown that military recruiters often target lower income schools, neighborhoods, and cities, preying on the hopelessness of poverty, where the military is marketed as a means to achieve success, stability, and advancement in society. We will look at the military’s mass infiltration of media and its overarching presence in these locations as they normally have a higher number of disenfranchised youth and people who desire to rise up the socioeconomic ladder. These tactics are exploitive because they are designed to target lower income individuals with the idea that joining the military is the sole way to escape poverty. We have found some of one’s vulnerability to these tactics to be correlated with unemployment, minimum wage, and income thresholds that threatens to break apart the traditional family (losing healthcare, disability benefits, welfare, etc. from marriage and combined income peaking above the poverty line but not high enough to pull people into a better quality of life). Using previous research on this topic as well as analytical methods, we seek to explore the methods of military recruitment propaganda and the socioeconomic vulnerabilities they take advantage of. We will look at differences in enlistment based on gender, race, and familial status and we will explore what tactics are used by the military to recruit and where they use these tactics.

PROPAGANDA

The military creates campaigns to recruit people, especially young people, into their ranks. Here, we analyze their content to discuss how they create explicit and subliminal messages that encourage people to enlist.
